The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) recognizes that while everyone
sleeps, not everyone sleeps well. Each night more than 70 million Americans who
suffer from a sleep disorder struggle to get a good night of sleep. Frustrated
and tired, they are constantly in search of reliable information about sleep
disorders and treatments. The AASM launched Sleepeducation.com in March of 2005
to address this rapidly growing demand for information about sleep.
This Web site is designed to be a valuable tool for patients and members of the
public who are seeking dependable information related to sleep, sleep
disorders, treatments and services. Although the processes of sleep and its
workings in the body are quite complex, the goal of this site is to present
accurate, scientific information in a concise manner that is easy to
understand.
The AASM was originally formed as the Association of Sleep Disorders Centers in
1975. Today, the AASM is the premiere professional medical society for
clinicians, researchers, students and other health care providers in the field
of sleep medicine. Sleep medicine is a recognized medical specialty that is
concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of patients with disorders of sleep
and daytime alertness.
Dedicated to the advancement of sleep medicine and related research, the AASM’s
mission is to assure quality care for patients with sleep disorders, to promote
the advancement of sleep research and to provide public and professional
education.
As the national accrediting body for sleep disorders centers and laboratories,
the AASM is the leading voice promoting the highest quality of care for
patients with sleep problems. The first sleep center was accredited in 1977.
Now there are more than 1,000 centers and labs accredited by the AASM that are
providing trusted medical assistance in communities all across the country.
The AASM also holds a seat in the American Medical Association’s House of
Delegates and is an accredited sponsor of continuing medical education courses
for physicians. In order to promote new research in sleep science, the AASM
founded the American Sleep Medicine Foundation to provide research grants to
investigators and educators. New discoveries and advances from throughout the
scientific community are spread broadly through the AASM’s peer-reviewed Journal
of Clinical Sleep Medicine, as well as through the journal
SLEEP, a joint publication of the AASM and the Sleep Research Society.
As an advocate for physicians, patients, and the general public, the AASM is
advancing sleep medicine and improving health.
