Does anyone have experience with patient-owned home monitoring equipment? I am not concerned with one-time procedures, where the doctor loans you something to use for one night. If there might be some value to collecting sleep data every night for several weeks or even months, to evaluate trends, it seems to me that modern technology may make it possible to do that in a cost-effective way. The purpose is analogous to home monitoring of blood pressure for hypertensives, or blood sugar for diabetics. There seem to be several products on the market, but I'm curious if anyone has actually used them, and has an opinion.

I should add that my interest is not in testing for sleep apnea, but monitoring the quality of sleep, in general.

TIA,

Mark

If you want more information on that type of testing there is a really good explanation at RespiratoryReview.Com, they have an article about Can Home Sleep Studies Replace Polysomnography it might answer some of the question you have... I work for a lab and we are testing some of the home testing equipment and the results are kind of up in the air at this time. Most Dr.s use at as a tool to see if a full study would benefit you to help cut cost for patients. Don't know if this info will help but Good Luck...

Thanks for the reference.

The URL is plural:

http://www.RespiratoryReviewS.com/

with an "s" on the end of "review". And the link to the article is:

http://www.respiratoryreviews.com/feb02/sleep.html

One supposes that there have been a lot of innovations in the last eight and a half years (since the article was written).

There is a device called Zeo made just for this purpose. It is a band you where on your head, and there is a website that helps you learn how to improve your sleep. It costs about $300.
