Hello,

My insomnia began after my son was born 18 months ago.  Although he was always a great sleeper, I found that as soon as I tried to sleep, my mind would race and I'd hear babies screaming in my head.  It would take me several hours to fall asleep, then of course I'd be up with the baby and the cycle would repeat.

My doctor gave me a prescription for Ambien, and I've been taking 10mg/night ever since (so for about 17 months).  Most nights 10mg works, some nights it doesn't.  On the nights it doesn't work, I take an additional 5mg, or just wait to fall asleep - sometimes up to 3 hours.

I had my second child 2 weeks ago, and the Ambien is now not working more than it is.  I know most parents of 2-week old babies don't sleep much, but this is the same problem:  racing thoughts, hearing screaming, etc.

I know I can't really take more Ambien, and in all honesty I'd love to get off of it entirely, but I can't imagine sleeping without assistance at this point.

Please help.  My doctors don't know what to do with me.  I tried seeing a therapist,  but she didn't really have the right expertise.  I am planning to call a sleep center tomorrow - maybe CBT is the answer?

Any insights appreciated.  THANK YOU.

Insomnia is one of the "complications" of the postpartum period. Although the exact nature is not understood, it has physical, emotional and hormonal roots.

Thank you for your response. I ended up seeing a sleep specialist at my local sleep center and with her help I've been off Ambien completely for 2 months and apart from the occasional bad night my sleep has been great. I feel better than I have in years.
