I have suffered severe insomnia for more than 30 years now. In 1978 I was put on Dalmane and, successively, just about every aid known - Dalmane, Trazedone, Lexapro, (many I have forgotten) and now, Lorezepam. My last year and a half has been horrendous. I go to bed at 10 or so and am wide awake until 5:00 (and very beside myself and exhausted). The next night it is the same thing all over again. I cannot recall when I have slept a full 8 hours. I feel there is something "different" about my brain. If I think about any subject, I cannot sleep (rumination). Lately, I have been getting barely two hours' sleep per night and it is very difficult for me during the daytime. No matter how tired I am, my body doesn't allow me to sleep. I am now waiting to go into a new sleep lab (one that just opened). I don't really believe there is anything new from 1978 but I need to do something. Do any of you have horrific insomnia like this? I can NEVER sleep during the day - not in a car, on a plane, in front of TV. My body doesn't seem to know how to relax. It is very debilitating. Thanks, and if you are anything like me....so sorry. |

Yup, same situation, since I was around ten years old. Learned how to make fractions into decimals (1/2 = .5 became 1/7 = .142857 and worse, couldn't stop doing them, faster and faster, learning shortcuts, etc.) and it was all downhill from there. The math stopped after about a year but the insomnia stayed and has steadily gotten worse. I've also been on several medicines, and literally can't sleep a wink without them, but unfortunately even with them I'm still tired because I still don't sleep enough and because the medicine makes me groggy for the first few hours of the next morning.
Not sure what to do about it, though--I've also been to some great doctors.
Some poeple have begun to urge me to go to more holistic practitioners, and I'm probably going to try that route soon, but have no idea if it will make a difference.

Hey guys,
have you tried Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)? It is the most effective treatment method for insomnia and on the long run more effective than sleep medication. CBT does not have side effects.
If your insomnia started during childhood, you might have so called idiopathic insomnia. That is unfortunately difficult to treat. However, with CBT you can improve the way you are dealing with your sleep problems and by that improve your life quality.

I too have had what is called psychophysiological insomnia since 1998 when I was forced to leave my job because I was only able to sleep from 4 to 6 am and was expected to get to work by 8. Fortunatly I was 62 and able to retire with Social Security and a pention from the Agricultural Research Service. I had a sleep study done in 1988 and found that I had Restless Leg Syndromn and Primary Leg Movement Disorder. I was given Parkinsons Medications to try but they did not work. Actually Tylenol III worked for quite a while. Then by 1998 nothing was helping and I was walking the floor in the winter and the streets in the summer from about 2pm to 4pm, then the pain and jerkyness subsided and I could sleep, usually till about 8am. As of Thanksgiving 2007 the RLS and the PLMD seem to be in remission, but the insomnia is worse. Many nights I have no sleep, others I well get to sleep at 6am and sleep until 11 or noon. I cannot take Ambian, I was picked up driving in my sleep by the police. Lunesta works on occasion for a brief time. I do not nap and I do not get sleepy. When I go to bed my mind will not stop rambling thoughts....not worries but stupid things like frogs jumping off lillie pads, or parades of women in 1880's dresses, none of it hangs together and the thoughts are just that and they jump rapidly from one to another. Yes, this affliction is ruining my life. If I am able to sleep it is always in the am so much of the social things are effected and by night I have no energy. I have had a lifetime of chronic depression and I am taking Celexa and will be for the rest of my life.....in fact I started takeing it around Thanksgiving, making me think it may have had something to do with the RLS and PLMD remission. I only see people with questions in these postings, I will keep monitoring for answers. I have an appointment with a sleep doctor this week and I will let you know if I get any insight. | In 1997 I was abruptly taken off HRT because of a BC diagnosis. I had been taking HRT for 11 yrs. Within 48 hrs I could not sleep. My internist has tried Ambien, Lunesta, etc., etc. on me. Nothing worked. Recently I have discovered two things that allow me to sleep 2-3 hrs at a time. One dose before bedtime and another after a few hours to return to sleep. The first is Diphenhydramine HCI, 50 mg, the other is hops extract 4:1, 150 mg...alternating one with the other night by night. Getting even small amounts of sleep is changing my life. It's is wonderful! Now I am sleeping approx. 5-6 total hours each night. The specific products I use are the following: Sleep Aid, sold by Target and Power to Sleep, made by Irwin Naturals and sold at Whole Foods. Also, I limit my coffee intake to about 1/2 to 1 cup each morning. Hope this may help someone. There are no side effects from either product. |

I have only had a few hours of drug induced sleep for the past 2 years and for the last 5 months I have had zero sleep. I now see no way out of my insomnia as I cannot remain active and busy enough during the day to get tired at night. Even though I am awake 24/7 I never get sleepy. My insomnia has made me very depressed and it has ruined my life. I have lost most of my friends and don't have meaninful activity during the day How do you function during the day after 30 years of insomnia and what other health problems has it caused: I feel I don't want to live the rest of my life with zero sleep, so my thoughts turn to suicide but doing that is scary too. |

Iv"e had insomnia all my life and im entering my 4th decade. It pretty much ruined every part of being a human. I dont really know if it s worth dealling with anymore |

I think that I'm one of the few like you that can't seem to get to sleep at night. When I do, usually something small (my wife moving) wakes me up. I don't sleep on planes, in cars and don't "nod off" either. I haven't sought medical assistance yet but I can't put up with it anymore.

If you have insomnia or sleeping problem then rozerem dosage is good for you. But sleep disorder might be an indication of a physical sickness.
